No. 20 Penn State Women's Gymnastics Defeats Maryland and Rhode Island
State College, Pa., March 9, 2002 - The 20th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team earned two home wins tonight as they defeated Maryland and Rhode Island, posting a score of 195.800. The team score, which was the highest this season, led the Lions past Maryland's score of 194.075 and Rhode Island's 191.500. Junior Lion Katie Rowland (Georgetown, Ontario) set a career-high all-around score of 39.725.
The team turned in a strong performance on vault, scoring a 49.100, and despite two falls on uneven bars, the team still recorded a 48.700. Led by Rowland's 9,950 on beam, the team finished with a 48.825, and also turned in strong performances on floor, earning a team score of 49.175. Rowland finished first on all four events this evening, and her lowest score of the night came on bars where she scored a 9.900. She scored a 9.950 on vault and beam, and a 9.925 on floor. Not only did Rowland's all-around score of 39.725 set a career record, but she also broke the Penn State school record, which she set last year. Junior Katie McAvoy (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished second in the all-around with a score 38.950, and she set a new career-high on beam, scoring a 9.925, which put her in second place on the event. Junior Leslie Bair (Lancaster, Pa.) tied her season-high record on vault, with a 9.850, and set a career-best on uneven bars, scoring a 9.825. Penn State hosts it's final meet this season next Saturday, March 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Rec Hall as it takes on West Virginia. The meet will be televised live on WPSX and will be held in conjunction with the Nittany Lion men, who host Army.
