No. 18 Women¡¯s Gymnastics Hosts Rival Pittsburgh Saturday

  • UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 7, 2007 ¨C The 18th-ranked Penn State women¡¯s gymnastics team (9-3) hosts intrastate rival Pittsburgh on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall. Live scoring for the meet will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com.

    The first 1,000 fans will receive a Penn State women¡¯s gymnastics piggy bank and will also have the chance to win prizes from Damon¡¯s with the ¡°Damon¡¯s Lucky Program¡± contest. Also running throughout the season will be the ¡°Big Ten Ticket Trivia Contest,¡± where fans will have the opportunity to win tickets to the 2007 Big Ten Women¡¯s Gymnastics Championships, hosted on March 31 by Penn State.

    Tickets for the meet are $5 for adults, $3 for youth and $2 each for groups of 10 or more. Penn State students are free with their university ID.

    The Series vs. Pittsburgh
    Penn State leads Pittsburgh, 38-2, in a series that began in 1966. The last meeting was a 196.400-189.750 Nittany Lion win on March 18, 2006 in Pittsburgh. The last meeting in Rec Hall was a 194.125-188.20 Penn State victory on Jan. 15, 2005.

    Last Time Out
    The 23rd-ranked Penn State women¡¯s gymnastics team scored a season-high 195.625 en route to claiming top honors at a five-team meet hosted by West Virginia last Saturday. Nittany Lion gymnasts captured two of the four event titles, as well as boasting the top two finishers in the all-around, while seven different gymnasts met or set 12 career or season highs.

    Freshman Brandi Personett (Katy, Texas) claimed her third all-around title of the year with a career-best 39.125 as freshman Alexandra Brockway (Macungie, Pa.) competed in the all-around for the first time in her career, placing second with a 38.925. Brockway was the Lions¡¯ highest finisher on vault, scoring a career-best 9.875 to tie for second while on bars, Brockway earned her first career event title with a career-high 9.850. Senior Stephanie Sullivan (Gaithersburg, Md.) recorded her third consecutive beam title with a career-high 9.925 and on floor, freshman Rosie Smith (Waterford, Pa.) was Penn State¡¯s top finisher with a career-high 9.850 to place fourth.

    Penn State takes to the road next weekend to face Big Ten foe Michigan on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Nittany Lions then return home to host Ohio State in a double-dual with the Penn State men¡¯s team on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in a contest that will be televised live on WPSU.
