Women¡¯s Golf Tie For Twelfth At Merecedes-Benz Invitational

Knoxville, Tenn., October 21, 2002 - The Penn State women¡¯s golf team placed twelfth overall in the 15-team field at the Mercedes-Benz Women¡¯s Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf, and Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Nittany Lions shot a first-round score of 323, a 317 in the second-round, and a 303 in the final-round en route to a total score of 943. Auburn captured the title with a three-round score of 899 (303-304-292). The Swedish Junior Nationals finished seven strokes behind (300-303-303-906) and five better than Florida (313-290-308).

Senior Katie Futcher (The Woodland, Texas) posted Penn State¡¯s top individual score with a 224 (75-74-75) to tie for 9th overall. Meghan Mull (Naperville, Ill.) (83-78-78) and Amber Weinreth (Auburn, N.Y.) (83-81-75) each carded a 239 to tie for 48th overall. Keri Dugan (Erie, Pa) (81-80-80) and Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) (81-80-80) placed in a tie for 54th after each carded a three-round total 241. Cindy Skilton (Paoli, Pa.) rounded out Penn State¡¯s lineup with a 250 (83-84-83) tied for a 71st place finish.

Ashley Prange (North Carolina) took home the individual crown with a score of 218 (72-70-76). Kari Damron (Purdue) fell one stroke behind with a second place finish of 219 (74-74-71).

The Penn State women¡¯s golf team returns to action on Friday, November 1 when it opens play at the Landfall Tradition Collegiate in Wilmington, N.C.
