UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2003) - The Penn State Women's Golf team set a school record with a team score of 600 upon completion of 36 holes to finish in third place after the first day of the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational Saturday at Penn State's Blue Course.

The two-round score of 600 beats the previous school record of 608, which was accomplished twice. The Nittany Lions fired a 36-hole score of 608 on Oct. 14, 2000 and on August 31, 1996, both at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational.

Rollins College sits atop the team standings, two strokes ahead of Penn State, with a score of 598. Maryland is second with 599 followed by Penn State, James Madison (605), Ohio (629), Princeton (630), Bowling Green (635), Yale (639), Stetson (653), St. Francis (664) and Bucknell (674).

The third and final round will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday morning at Penn State's Blue Course.

James Madison's Carol Green shot two rounds of even-par 72 for the overall individual lead with 144. Rollins' Freddie Seeholzer is second with 146 (72-74) while Maryland's Katie Stepanek (70-77) and Kristen Shew (76-71) are tied in third with 147.

Sophomore Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) paced the Nittany Lions on Saturday with a 75-74-149, which is good for ninth place in the Invitational and tied for sixth best in school history.

Fellow teammate and freshman Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) sits in tenth after firing a 1-under 71 in the first round and a two-round total of 151. Another freshman, Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.), is in 11th-place with a 78-74-152.
