Weinerth Leads Nittany Lions to Third-Place Finish at Lady Northern Golf Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. September 25, 2005 - Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) shot a final-round 74 and the Penn State women's golf team finished in third place at the Lady Northern Golf Tournament held at the University of Indiana Golf Course Sept. 24-25.

Weinerth opened the day tied for sixth place and held her spot by carding three birdies in the first six holes. The Nittany Lion senior tallied a 71-74-74 for a three-round, three-over-par total of 219. Redshirt freshman Sara Lester (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished second for Penn State and tied for 12th overall with a 70-77-76. Lester also recorded a team-low two-under-par 70 in the first round on Saturday, which put her in a tie for first place after 18 holes.

Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) and Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) both finished tied for 23rd overall. Lester shot a 77-74-78 while Lundy went 79-73-77 over the three rounds. Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) finished in fifth place for Penn State and tied for 34th among the Lady Northern field with a 75-75-83. Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) recorded a three-round score of 77-82-83 to finish tied for 60st.

Purdue placed first overall with a combined score of 867, while Michigan State snagged second place with a combined total of 887. After third-place Penn State (894), Notre Dame (903) and Indiana (909) rounded out the team top 5. Individually, Purdue's Maria Hernandez and Indiana State's Samantha Richdale finished tied for first with a three-round score of 214.
