Sept. 21, 2007
University Park, Pa. - The Penn State women's golf team will host the first of three home tournaments this year this weekend at the Penn State Blue Course as the Nittany Lions host the annual Lady Northern Invitational. The Lady Northern is held annually each fall at the course that the Big Ten Championships are being held at the following spring. Penn State is hosting both the Lady Northern and Big Ten Championships this year for just the second time since joining the Big Ten.
A total of 10 out of the 11 Big Ten squads will be participating in this weekend's tournament, as well as four other non-Big Ten schools to fill out the field. Purdue, which was the NCAA runner-up last season, will be the only Big Ten team not making the trip this weekend as the nine other schools will join Penn State. Other schools also participating in the Lady Northern are Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Toledo and Division II power Rollins, who has played in Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational in the past, including last year.
This will be the second tournament of the year for the Nittany Lions, who played in the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. the beginning of last week. The Lady Northern will be the second of five fall tournaments for the Nittany Lions, who will also their annual Nittany Lion Invitational next Sunday and Monday also at the Blue Course.
"We are very excited about hosting the Lady Northern and Big Ten's this year," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "In addition to being able to have our team play at home in three tournaments this year, we will be able to showcase our golf course and all of the recent improvements to it to the rest of the Big Ten as well as other top teams from around the East and Midwest. We are eagerly looking forward to some outstanding golf this weekend."
There will be 36 holes played on Saturday, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Sunday will consist of 18 holes with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun.
