Women's Golf Team 13th at NCAA East Regional; Futcher Qualifies for NCAA Championships
Clemmons, N.C., May 10, 2003 - The Penn State women's golf team placed 13th out of a 21-team field at the NCAA East Regional Championships, led senior Katie Futcher (The Woodlands, Texas), who tied for third place to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The Nittany Lions shot a 12 over par round of 296 on Saturday at the Par 71, 6,116-yard Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C., their best score during the three days of competition. Penn State shot a 907 for the three rounds (305-306-296).
Duke won the event with an 857 with Georgia (865), Vanderbilt (865), Auburn (867), Arizona (874), North Carolina (882), South Carolina (884), and Florida State (889) rounding out the eight teams who advance to the NCAA Championships.
After shooting an opening round 75, Futcher delivered superb consecutive rounds of three-under par 68 to shoot a two-under 211, tying Meaghan Francella of North Carolina for third place. Futcher and Furman's Brandi Jackson, the top individual with a 205, advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-23 at Purdue. Futcher is a two-time All-Big Ten selection.
Senior Keri Dugan (Erie, Pa.) shot her best round of the competition on Saturday with a one-over par 72 to finish tied for 64th place. Carding a 77 in her final round of play, freshman Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) tied for 79th place. Senior Cynthia Skilton (Paoli, Pa.) finished off the weekend with a 79 for a tie in 85th place. Senior Meghan Mull (Naperville, Ill.) tied for 94th after carding an 81.
