Women's Golf Holds Onto Eighth Through Three Rounds of Big Ten Championships




(BLOOMINGTON, IND.) April 29, 2006 - The Penn State women's golf team is still in eighth place after three rounds at the Big Ten Championships being held at the Indiana University Golf Course. The Nittany Lions shot 303-302 in the first two rounds, and carded a 299, with help from Sara Lester¡¯s (Walnut Creek, Calif.) two-under-par third round.

Lester improved by eight strokes on her second round score, to shoot a 70 in the third round on Saturday. She is currently tied in 23rd place with a score of 80-78-70-228. Senior co-captain Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) is tied with Lester, and shot a 76 in the third round (80-72-76-228).

Leading the Nittany Lion squad is junior Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.). Lester continued her strong play, carding a third-round score of 75. She stands tied for thirteenth with 73-77-75-225, just 8 over par.

Co-captain Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) stepped up, knocking one stroke off of her second-round 79 to be tied in 32nd, just three strokes behind teammates S. Lester and Weinerth. Lundy¡¯s timing is impeccable because she is playing one of her best tournaments of this season, with a score of 74-79-78-231.

Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) is tied for 39th overall, with a score of 76-77-81-234. Fellow senior Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) shot an 80 in the third round and is currently in 50th place (81-76-80-237).

Northwestern¡¯s Alice Kim is holding onto first place after shooting a 4-under-par 68 in the first round. Overall, Purdue is in first place (881), followed closely by Michigan State (883). Ohio State is in third place (886) and host Indiana is in fourth (893). Michigan is just two strokes behind the Hoosiers with 895. Kim and Northwestern are in 6th place (902). Nipping on their heels is the Hawkeyes of Iowa (903) who lead Penn State, in eighth place (904). Wisconsin (927), Minnesota (936) and Illinois (939) round out the 11-team spread.

The fourth and final round will begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. There is an 80 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms but the weather should hold out to finish the tournament.
