Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Hurricane Katrina Relief
(UNIVERSITY PARK, PA) April 26, 2006 - The Penn State women¡¯s golf team, in partnership with over 30 other collegiate squads, hosted a golf tournament to raise funds and help build a house in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. This event, led by the National Golf Coaches Association raised $8,921 at Penn State alone. The team had committed to raising at least $2,000. The tournament, dubbed, ¡°Team Build,¡± was played at the Penn State White Course on Monday, April 17. ¡°Team Build¡± was open to all who were interested, with a $100 registration fee. Ten foursomes competed and about forty people overall attended. A current member of the PSU Golf Courses, who wishes to remain anonymous, donated $2,250 to the cause. The participating schools hoped to raise well over the $60,000 requirement to build a house, and are sending 25 coaches to Louisiana this summer to help build it. The NGCA announced its plans to raise money back in February, when according to Penn State head coach and NGCA president Denise St. Pierre said, ¡°[Habitat] indicated they were still greatly in need¡both financially and in volunteers.¡± Last year¡¯s convention for the association was held in New Orleans and was a big hit with all the coaches. When Hurricane Katrina hit the southern United States, 1,300 people lost their lives and more than can be imagined lost their homes. The NGCA¡¯s commitment to give money and time to Habitat for Humanity¡¯s cause shows their compassion, not only for the city. They are also supporting fellow members like the top program at Tulane University. The Penn State women¡¯s golf team will head to the Big Ten Championships hosted by Indiana University this weekend, April 28-30.
