Lion Golfers Battle Snow at Big Ten Championships

After a spring snowstorm hit Ann Arbor, officials cancelled the final round of the Big Ten Championships. Amber Weinerth led the Lady Lions with a three-round 243, good enough for 32nd place.

ANN ARBOR, MICH. April 23, 2005 - With snow falling at the University of Michigan golf course in Ann Arbor on Sunday, the final round of the Big Ten women's golf championships was cancelled. Final placings were determined based on the scores from the first three rounds. Ohio State won the overall event, edging out No. 2 Michigan by a remarkable 32 strokes.

Junior Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) led Penn State with a three-round score of 77-79-87-243. Weinerth finished tied for 32nd place in the field and the Nittany Lions placed 11th place as a team. Weinerth also won the team Sportsmanship Award, announced at the awards ceremony Sunday morning.

Senior Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) tied for 34th place after shooting 77-81-86-244. Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) was the third Nittany Lion in the top 40, as she shot a 79-80-86-245. She tied for 38th place. Christin Pachaca (Williamsport, Pa.) finished in 51st place after shooting an 80-84-89-253. Emily Pavesich (Glen Arm, Md.) shot a 83-86-89-258 and tied for 55th place while Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) rounded out the Lions' squad with a 80-85-94-259, good enough to tie for 57th place.

Ohio State's Kristen White won the tournament with a 73-73-76-222. The Buckeyes held the top four individual spots in the tournament.
