WomenĄŻs Golf Rallies to Win Bonnie Hoover Invitational
(University Park, Pa.) April 9, 2006- The Penn State womenĄŻs golf team, coming off two tough tournaments to start the spring season, won the Bonnie Hoover Invitational hosted by James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. After one round the Nittany Lions were in second place behind Georgetown and Invitational champion Nicole Hayashi. The Lions rallied together with a stellar final round to take over first place on day two. Junior Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) and senior Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) shot scores of 73 and 74, respectively, to lead the Nittany Lions in the final round. Lester finished fifth in the spread, with a two-round score of 78-73-151. Just one shot ahead, Weinerth carded a two-over-par in the second round to place fourth overall with 76-74-150. Junior Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) had a very strong showing, with 76 strokes in the first round and a final score of 76-77-153, good for the tie in eighth. The eighth place finish is her best in collegiate play. Pennsylvania native, Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) also competed well, also shooting a 76 in the first round. Wolfe finished tied for sixteenth (76-81-157). Co-captain Lauren Lundy improved by three strokes in the second round to finish tied for 53rd at 86-83-169. Competing as an individual, sophomore Sara Lester (Walnut Creek, Calif.) cut three strokes off her first round score to finish 81-78-159, tying for twentieth place. Penn State edged out first round leader Georgetown by just two strokes (611), which finished with 613. Princeton University came in third just one stroke behind the Hoyas (614) and the College of William and Mary took the fourth spot (623), with Methodist College capping off the top five finishers. The Nittany Lions have the next weekend off before heading to Big Ten rival Ohio State for the Lady Buckeye Invitational April 22-23.
