Nittany Lions Sit in 17th After First Day of Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. (Mar. 6, 2005) - Junior Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) shot a 7-over-par 79 on Sunday to lead the Penn State women's golf team to a 17th-place standing with a 332 after Day 1 of the Pinehurst Challenge at the par-72, 6,009-yard Pinehurst #8. East Carolina leads the challenge with 302, Washington State is second (303), UNC-Wilmington is third (312), Oregon is fourth (313) and Miami (Fla.) is fifth (314). The second round will begin 8 a.m. Monday. Sophomore Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) is second for Penn State with a first-round 83, good for 57th place. Junior Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) is 71st with 84, senior Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) is 80th with 86, and sophomore Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) is 89th with 88.
