Penn State Women's Golf Places Fifth at Carolinas Classic

Pinehurst, N.C., February 26, 2002 — The Penn State women’s golf team placed fifth overall in the 22-team field at the Edward Watts/Carolinas Invitational at the Centennial Course in Pinehurst, N.C.

The Nittany Lions shot a first-round score of 317 before carding a 314 during the final round en route to a total score of 631. Memphis captured the tourney title with a two-round score of 610 (311-299). The Tigers finished one stroke ahead of North Carolina-Greensboro (293-318-611) and two better than Charleston Southern (301-311-612).

Senior Katie Futcher (The Woodlands, Texas) posted Penn State’s top individual score with a 155 (80-75) to tie for 15th overall. Keri Dugan (Erie, Pa.) (77-81) and Rosemarie Fuster (Lima, Peru) (79-79) each carded a score of 158 to to tie for 28th overall. Meghan Mull (Naperville, Ill.) placed in a tie for 34th place after shooting a two-round total of 160 (81-79). Susan Oliver (Latrobe, Pa.) rounded out Penn State’s lineup with a 169 (87-82) and a 81st place finish.

Four players finished tied for the individual crown with a score of 150, including Marianne Ruud (Memphis), Julie St. Onge (Charleston Southern), Dani Heimbecker (North Carolina-Greensboro) and Carol Green (James Madison).

The Penn State women’s golf team returns to action on Monday, March 4 when it opens play at the Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif.
