Women's Golf Team Opens Season at Lady Puerto Rico Classic
SAN JUAN, P.R. (Feb. 21, 2005) - Junior Amber Weinerth (Auburn, N.Y.) shot a 7-over-par 79 on Monday, but the Penn State women's golf team struggled in the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, finishing the day in 14th with a first-round 335 at the par-72, 6,000-yard Dorado Del Mar Country Club.
Auburn is first with 299, Texas Christian is second with 304, California is third with 306, Florida is fourth with 308, and Georgia and Wake Forest are tied for fifth with 312.
Second-round play will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, and the three-day event will wrap up with the third round at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Playing outdoors for the first time since November, the Nittany Lions were trying to get a feel for the course on the first day. Sophomore Maggie Lester (Oswego, N.Y.) is in 52nd place with an 82, sophomore Evelyn Paik (Toronto, Ontario) is 62nd with 84, and senior Lauren Lundy (Wayne, Pa.) and junior Katrin Wolfe (Johnstown, Pa.) are tied for 74th with 90.
California's Sofie Andersson leads the tournament with a 1-under 71.
