Field Hockey Bests Princeton 3-1 to Advance to NCAA Tournament¡¯s Second Round

College Park, MD, November 15, 2003 ¨C The Penn State Field Hockey team, coming off a second place showing in last weekend¡¯s Big Ten Conference Tournament, topped Princeton for the second time this season to advance to the second round of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. The Nittany Lions will face the Terrapins of Maryland, winners of the first game in College Park.

Timarie Legel (Morgantown, Pa.) started the scoring for the Nittany Lions, taking a Heather Conroy (Duncannon, Pa.) pass and beating Princeton netminder, Allison Nemeth. Legel¡¯s goal, her team-leading 18th of the season, came with 11:02 remaining in the half and put the Nittany Lions up by a 1-0 margin.

Minutes later, Karin Grap (Van Etten, NY) put Penn State up by a 2-0 mark with her 12th goal of the season. The goal came with 34 seconds remaining in the period and gave Penn State its two-goal margin heading into halftime. It was the 13th time the Nittany Lions have taken a lead into the half, posting an 11-2 mark in such games.

Princeton began the second half on the offensive, blasting six shots at Penn State netminder, Annie Zinkavich (Kingston, Pa.) in the opening 12 minutes of the period. Zinkavich turned away all four of the Tigers¡¯ shots on goal to maintain the Nittany Lions¡¯ 2-0 lead. She made nine saves for the game while narrowly missing her eighth shutout of the season

Grap put the Nittany Lions up three goals with her second goal of the game and 13th of the season. The goal came off a rebounded shot by Heather Conroy with 11:14 remaining in the game. It was the tenth game in which Grap tallied a goal this season, with Penn State posting a 9-1 mark in those games and a 3-0 mark in games that she scored two or more goals.

Princeton scored its lone goal on the last play of the game, a corner situation after time had expired. The Tigers¡¯ goal was scored by Lizzie Black off an assist by Cory Picketts and closed the game to the final 3-1 margin.

Penn State (18-6) will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and take on the host Maryland Terrapins. Maryland defeated California 2-0 in the first game of the day and will enter tomorrow¡¯s contest with an overall record of 18-2. It will be the fourth time the two schools will face each other in postseason play, with Maryland holding a 3-0 advantage in the previous contests.

Game and Tournament Notes: With the win, Penn State improves to 26-26 in all-time postseason contests and 4-2 against Princeton in the postseason¡­ Timarie Legel¡¯s goal at the 23:49 mark in today¡¯s game marks the third consecutive postseason game in which she has scored a goal¡­ Karin Grap¡¯s game-winning goal against Princeton was the first of the season for her and the second of her career¡­ Penn State has an all-time mark of 19-7-1 against Maryland, with the Terrapins winning the last three contests.
