Penn State to Play Princeton at NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., November 7, 2000 - NCAA officials announced the 16-team 2000 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament bracket today in an Internet selection show. The unseeded Penn State field hockey team will play Princeton on Saturday, November 11 at College Park, Md. Defending National Champion and third-seeded Maryland will play New Hampshire and will host the Lady Lions and the Tigers. The winner of each game on Saturday will go on to play in the second round game on Sunday, November 12.

Top-seeded Old Dominion will have home-field advantage throughout the tournament. With just one loss, the Monarchs will play Stanford and will host Connecticut and Virginia. Second-seeded North Carolina will host Boston University, Massachusetts and Kent State. The Tar Heels will take on Kent State in their first-round game.

The fourth and final seed is Wake Forest. They will play Harvard and will host Big Ten Champion Michigan and William and Mary.

All 16 teams will battle for the right to play in the NCAA Final Four which will be hosted by Old Dominion University on Saturday, November 18. The NCAA title game is on Sunday November 19.

The Lady Lions played the Tigers three weeks ago. Penn State lost that game, 3-1, in New Jersey, but were not carrying a full squad because of injuries suffered against Michigan which was played two days prior. Penn State is ahead in the all-time series, 14-2, with both losses coming in the last two meetings. The teams met once before in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers defeated PSU, 3-1, in an NCAA Quarterfinal game which was hosted by Princeton in 1998.
