Penn State Gets No. 4 Seed for Upcoming Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament at Bigler Field

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2003) - The 7th-ranked Penn State Field Hockey team will be the No. 4 seed and will play host to No. 5 Iowa 12:30 p.m. Friday when the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament gets underway at Bigler Field.

The Nittany Lions will host the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament for the second time in its history Nov 7-9. Penn State hosted the tournament in 1995 to pick up its first of four straight Big Ten Tournament titles.

No. 2 Michigan State, which shared the regular-season Big Ten Championship with Michigan, will kick off the tournament versus No. 7 Indiana 10 a.m. Friday. Penn State and Iowa, which defeated the Nittany Lions 1-0 Sept. 27 at Iowa, will follow at 12:30 p.m. and No. 3 Ohio State will play No. 6 Northwestern at 3 p.m. to close out the first day of action. No. 1 Michigan will have a bye in the first round.

The Wolverines will play the winner of No. 4 Penn State and No. 5 Iowa 11 a.m. Saturday and the winner of No. 2 Michigan State/No. 7 Indiana will play the winner of No. 3 Ohio State/No. 6 Northwestern at 2 p.m.. Saturday's winners will play for the Big Ten Tournament title 1 p.m. Sunday.

Along with the 7th-ranked Nittany Lions, four other Big Ten teams are ranked in the most recent STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. Michigan State is fifth, Michigan is sixth, Iowa is ninth and Ohio State is 15th. Northwestern is among those schools "also receiving votes."

Penn State finished the regular season 15-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten to post its 26th consecutive double-digit victory season, an NCAA record.

The Wolverines and Spartans finished with identical 5-1 conference marks this season, but Michigan was awarded the No. 1 seed and first-round bye based on its win at Michigan State on Oct. 17th.

Tickets are available at the Penn State ticket office by calling 1-800-833-5533 or 814-863-1000. An all-session pass will be availabe up until the gates open on Nov. 7. The cost for the all-session pass is $10 for adults and $5 for students, youths and senior citizens.

Single-day tickets will be $4 for adults and $2 for students, youths and senior citizens. There will also be a $1 group rate for groups of 10 or more, who are 18 and under.
