UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. October 30, 2004 - In a defensive-minded match, the Penn State field hockey team fell to Michigan, 1-0, in front of 587 at Bigler Field on Saturday.

The game marked the last regular season contest at home for seniors Natalie Berrena (State College, Pa.), Amanda Eckert (Lititz, Pa.), Karin Grap (Van Etten, N.Y.), Bekah Hostetler (Hershey, Pa.), Michele Rigby (Dover, Del.), and Molly Schriver (Kenilworth, Ill.).

Neither team could gain much momentum through the first half and well into the second. But Michigan (14-5, 5-1) got the ball deep into Penn State's territory, and after two Wolverine shots that were deflected by Penn State goalkeeper Megan Akstin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Mary Fox knocked the ball in at the 64:55 mark.

Penn State (10-9, 3-3) tried to push the ball offensively in the last five minutes, but the Wolverines held the ball, eating up the clock.

For the game, Akstin tallied seven saves, while the Penn State offense took five shots on the game. Michigan finished with 11 shots.

Next up for the Nittany Lions is the 2004 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, hosted by Northwestern, Nov. 5-7. The Lions will leave Wednesday for Evanston.
