State College, Pa., October 25, 2002 - The No. 6 Penn State field hockey team suffered its first home loss of the season as it was defeated 3-1 by No. 2 Michigan on Friday evening at a chilly Bigler Field.
Despite a game time temperature of 36 degrees, both teams came out hot on the offensive end as each of the game's four goals were scored during the opening 35 minutes of play.
April Fronzoni gave Michigan its first lead of the game at 1-0 with a blast from the right side of the arc at the 6:32 mark of the first half.
Kelly Concini (Danville, Pa.) answered for Penn State when she buried her third goal of the season off a rebound to even the score at 1-1 at 9:06.
Michigan took control of the contest when Stephanie Johnson scored back-to-back goals at 18:59 and 28:41 of the first half.
Penn State had a number of chances to draw even in the second half but came away empty as breakaway chances by Timarie Legel (Morgantown, Pa.) and Karin Grap (Van Etten, N.Y.) were turned away by Michigan goalkeeper Molly Maloney.
The Nittany Lions also had a goal off a penalty corner disallowed during the final 35 minutes of action.
The setback drops Penn State overall mark to 12-3 and 3-2 in the Big Ten while Michigan improves to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the league.
With the loss, the Nittany Lions saw its record versus ranked opponents this year slip to 3-3.
