Field Hockey Downed by Duke, 4-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. October 22, 2004 - In a tough matchup vs. the No. 3 ranked team in the country, the No. 19 Penn State field hockey team lost to Duke, 4-1, Saturday in Evanston, Ill. The loss dropped the Lions to 9-8 overall, 3-2 in Big Ten action.

Michele Rigby (Dover, Del.) scored for the Lions off a penalty shot in the second half, giving her four goals over the last two games. Rigby also led the team in shots with four. Natalie Berrena (State College, Pa.), Kiersten Wood (Lititz, Pa.) and Annelise Legel (Morgantown, Pa.) also registered one shot each in the contest.

Duke scored the first three goals of the game, the first coming at 8:56 mark of the first half and the second in the 34th minute. The Blue Devils added one two in the second half at the 48:11 mark and then at the 53:17 mark, before giving up the score to Rigby.

Duke out-shot the Lions, 11-8, and registered eight penalty corners to Penn State's five.

The Nittany Lions head to Bucknell on Oct. 26, and hosts Michigan Oct. 30 for the final home game of the season. That contest against the Wolverines will be the last for seniors Grap, Rigby and Eckert, and the trio will be honored before the game.
