UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. October 9, 2004 - The No. 19 Penn State field hockey team dropped a close one to No. 3 Michigan State, losing, 1-0, on Saturday in East Lansing. The loss was the Nittany Lions' first in Big Ten play this year, as they fell to 8-6 overall, 2-1 in conference action.

Natalie Berrena, Michele Rigby and Annelise Legel all fired two shots in the game, while Mallory Weisen added one more. Megan Akstin tallied six saves in the contest.

The game was off to a slow start, as both teams ran the ball end-to-end across the field for scoring attempts. With just under 10 minutes in to play, senior Spartan midfielder Annebet Beerman fired a sharp-angle shot from the far left side of the scoring arc and freshman forward Michelle Ciliberti tipped it in to give MSU a 1-0 lead.

Penn State returns to action Friday, Oct. 15 as they host Iowa. For more information on Penn State field hockey and Nittany Lion athletics, visit
