State College, Pa., October 5, 2001 - The Nittany Lion field hockey team suffered its fifth one-goal loss of the season, as Iowa defeated Penn State, 2-1, at Grant Field on Friday afternoon. Junior Timarie Legel (Moragntown, Pa./Twin Valley) recorded PSU's only goal of the game. Penn State, who has never finished lower than second in the Big Ten, is 0-3 in the league and 4-6 overall. The Hawkeyes improve to 7-3 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Nittany Lions outshot Iowa, 13-7, but, nevertheless, could not knock in the goal needed to overcome the Hawkeyes. Five minutes into the game, Iowa's Gina Carr scored her second goal of the season, giving the Hawkeyes the lead, 1-0. It wasn't until just under five minutes were left in the half that Penn State responded when Legel's goal knotted the game at 1-1.

The teams battled to within the 10-minute mark before Rebekah Heavrin knocked in the game winner on a pass from Pattie Gillern with 8:51 left in the game.

Legel has tallied at least one goal in three of Penn State's last four games. Penn State returns to action on Sunday, October 5 at Bigler Field, hosting #5 Princeton at 1 p.m.
