Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss to #1 ODU, 1-0
Norfolk, Va., September 3, 2001 - An Old Dominion goal 34 seconds into the overtime period lifted the top ranked Lady Monarchs over the No. 7 Nittany Lion field hockey team, 1-0, on Monday afternoon at Foreman Field. Penn State falls to 0-2 overall, while defending national champion ODU improves to 2-2.
The Nittany Lions held Old Dominion scoreless for all of regulation despite being outshot 14-4. The Lady Monarchs also held an 11-1 advantage on penalty corners.
Just seconds after the start of the overtime period, ODU gained control of the ball and pushed upfield for the shot, but sophomore Annie Zinkavich (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) denied the attempt. The ball rebounded right to the stick of sophomore Angie Loy, however, who knocked the ball in for the win.
Zinkavich had a solid performance in the net, posting nine saves on the afternoon. The Nittany Lions will return to State College for the home opener for a clash against No. 8 Connecticut. The game will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at Bigler Field.
