Field Hockey Heads to Connecticut for a Pair of Games
Mallory Weisen and the field hockey team will play two games in Connecticut this weekend against Northeastern and Connecticut.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; September 1, 2006 - After picking up its first win of the season on Thursday night at Lock Haven, the Penn State field hockey team will waste little time in returning to the field once again as the Nittany Lions will travel up to Connecticut for two games this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The Lions will play two games on the campus of UConn, both against ranked teams named Huskies.
On Saturday at noon, the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions will face the No. 13 Northeastern Huskies, who will enter the game with a 1-0 record. Then, on Sunday at noon, Penn State will take on the host UConn Huskies, who are ranked ninth in the NFHCA poll. UConn is 2-0 entering this weekend and will take on Michigan on Friday before playing PSU on Sunday.
Britney Long leads the Nittany Lions in goals so far this year with two after scoring a goal in each of the last two games. Kiersten Wood, a first team All-Big Ten selection last year, scored her first goal of the year on Thursday night vs. Lock Haven. Penn State is yet to score a goal in the first half through its first three games, however the Lions are outscoring their opponents 4-1 so far in the second half of games.
This will be the 29th straight year that Penn State and UConn have met. The two teams have played every year since the 1978 season. Penn State leads the all-time series 15-10-4. Northeastern and Penn State will be meeting for just the fourth time, with PSU holding a 2-1 advantage in that series.
This weekend continues a tough opening stretch to the season for the Nittany Lions. After returning home from this weekend's games, Penn State will take on Princeton on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. on AstroTurf Field, finishing a stretch that will have seen Penn State play six games in the first 12 days of the season.
