The victory was only the second ever for a No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. No seventh seed has ever made the Title Game. The seventh seed had been 1-8 with the lone win (prior to Thursday) coming from Michigan State in 2006.
The win snapped a mini two-game losing streak in Big Ten Tournament action. The last win before Thursday came on Nov. 1, 2007 by a 3-0 final over Ohio State.
Senior Amy Bonenberger finished with two assists to set a new career-high.
Sophomore Jessica Longstreth's assist on the first goal was her first of the season.
The win was only Penn State's second of the season when allowing more penalty corners.
Freshman Kelsey Amy's two goals tied a career-high, set on Oct. 24 vs. Pacific, also in a neutral site game. Four of her team-leading seven goals have come in neutral site games with three tallies in the other 17 games combined.
It was also the fourth two-goal performance of the season for Penn State, three coming in the last three games. Along with her two, junior Daneen Zug also netted a pair against Pacific while redshirt freshman Hannah Allison had two in the home-opener vs. Lock Haven (Sept. 4).
Ohio State was the highest-ranked opponent (12th) that the Lions have beaten since last Oct. 12, 2008 when they topped No. 10 Virginia, 1-0 at home.
Penn State scored first for only the sixth time this season.
