The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will send a total of six fencers to this weekend's U.S. Olympic Trials, which will be held in Palm Springs, Calif., from Dec. 12-14. The men's squad will be represented by remarkable freshman Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) and All-American sophomore Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.), both of whom will compete in the men's saber. Farr claimed the title in each of his first three tournaments this fall and reached the top 16 in the recent Junior World Cup. Zagunis captured the Garret Penn State Open title last month and went 2-1 against defending National Champion Notre Dame in dual meet action last weekend. The Nittany Lion women's team will send four athletes to the national tournament. Junior Co-captain Meredith Chin (Wynnewood, Pa.) and talented freshman Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) will compete in the women's foil. Chin is coming off of a solid 2-1 effort against Notre Dame last weekend, while Hiss narrowly missed the top 16 at the Junior World Cup. Freshman Case Szarwark (Nashville, Tenn.) will duel in the women's epee after a top-16 finish at the Junior World Cup and an impressive 2-1 performance against Notre Dame in her collegiate dual meet debut. Three-time All-American Heather Brosnan (Portland, Ore.) will represent Penn State in the women's saber after seeing little action this fall. All of the Nittany Lion fencers will attempt to score points toward a berth on the U.S. National Team.
