STATE COLLEGE, Pa., November 17, 2002 ¨C Senior Jessica Burke (Upper Marlboro, N.J.) earned her second career Garret Open women¡¯s epee title today with a victory over teammate Katarzyna Trzopek (Warsaw, Poland) in the gold medal bout. In addition to Trzopek, senior Austin O¡¯Neill (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) also claimed a silver medal in the 30th Annual Garret Penn State Open, held this weekend at the Mary Beaver White Building. The Lady Lions finished the day with six medals to follow up the eight-medal performance their male teammates posted yesterday.
For the second time in the tournament, an event culminated in an all-Penn State gold medal bout, as the 2000 Garret Open champion Burke tangled with impressive freshman Trzopek in the women¡¯s epee final. Burke, who won the National Championship in her freshman season, used her extensive championship experience to top Tryzopek by a 15-8 margin. It is interesting to note that both Lady Lions finished ahead of the defending women¡¯s epee National Champion Kerry Walton of Notre Dame, who left with the bronze medal. The other all-Penn State title bout occurred in the men¡¯s saber when All-American Alex Weber (Frieburg, Germany) held off another talented freshman, Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.), to win his second consecutive Garret Open championship.
O¡¯Neill also reached the gold medal bout in the women¡¯s saber, but she came up just short of claiming the crown. She jumped out to an early lead over Alexis Jemal of Rutgers, but Jemal came back to post a 15-8 victory. Juniors Heather Brosnan (Portland, Ore.) and Meredith Steyer (Topsfield, Mass.) finished in back-to-back medalist positions, as they recorded sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively.
In the women¡¯s foil, sophomore Meredith Chin (Wynnewood, Pa.) led the Lady Lions with a seventh place medal performance. Fellow freshman Rachel Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) logged the next best effort for Penn State, as she came in at 12th place in the event.
Penn State head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov was pleased with the outcome of the tournament and his team¡¯s performance. ¡°This was a big tournament, a good tournament, and a tough tournament,¡± said Kaidanov. ¡°In general, I¡¯m satisfied with the results. There are still some improvements that need to be made, but I have a lot of answers,¡± elaborated Kaidanov. ¡°I still have some questions, but I have a lot of answers.¡±
The Penn State fencing team will kick off its dual meet season this coming weekend as they travel to North Carolina to face the Tarheels, New York University, Rutgers, and Northwestern. The meet is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m.
