Fencers Claim Three of Six Titles at Annual Garret Open

State College, Pa. ¨C The Penn State men¡¯s and women¡¯s fencing teams hosted the annual Penn State Garret Open over the weekend at the White Building on campus. Lion fencers claimed three of the six individual titles up for grabs at the event, marking the first time in seven years that Penn State won three or more titles in the tournament.

Sophomore Jessica Burke (Upper Marlboro, Md.) won the title in the women¡¯s epee. She was followed by Maya Lawrence of Princeton and Marta Sciubisz of Michigan. Stephanie Eim (Hendersonville, Tenn.) placed fifth and Beth Shelley (McSherrystown, Pa.) finished 10th.

Senior captain Charlotte Walker (Victoria, Australia) claimed her first Garret foil title and her second overall (she won the epee title as a freshman). Melinda Rostal of Princeton was second. Judit Gordon (State College, Pa.) was sixth overall and Jennifer Bailey (Guilford, Conn.) was 18th to close out PSU¡¯s top three finishers.

Sarah Jacobsen of Connecticut won the title in the women¡¯s saber, with Meredith Steyer (Topsfield, Mass.) placing eighth as PSU¡¯s top finisher. Stephanie Tam (Coram, N.Y.) was 11th for the Lady Lions and Jessica Clark (Springfield, Pa.) was 14th.

Nittany Lion freshman Adam Wiercioch (Gliwice, Poland) made a stellar debut for Penn State, claiming the men¡¯s epee title as a rookie. He edged out teammate Brendan Baby (Wilmette, Ill.) who was second. Lucas Pimenta (Stockholm, Sweden) was seventh.

Daren Senft of Connecticut won the title in the men¡¯s foil. Penn State¡¯s top finisher was freshman Nonpatat Panchan (Bangkok, Thailand), who was eighth. Jon Charles (Santa Rosa, Calif.) was 15th and Daniel Bhutta (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was 20th.

Gabor Szelle of Indiana won the men¡¯s saber championships. Penn State¡¯s top finisher was senior captain Michael Takagi (Fayetteville, Ga.), who was 11th. Wyatt Kasserman (Peapack, N.J.) was 20th and Michael Stahlhut (Peachtree City, Ga.) was 24th.

The Nittany Lions will now prepare for the opening of dual meet season on Dec. 2. Penn State will travel to New York University for duals with NYU, Rutgers, North Carolina and Princeton.
