Four Penn State Fencers Make Strong Showing At U.S. Championships
MIAMI, Fla. July 2, 2007 - Over the weekend, four Penn State fencers competed at the U.S. Fencing Summer National Championships in Miami, Fla. All four finished in the top 10 and three earned medals. Junior Caitlin Thompson (Portland, Ore.) was Penn State's top finisher, earning a silver medal in the women's saber division. Thompson was one of 12 Nittany Lions who attended the NCAA Championships in March. She fought her way to the gold medal bouts and finished with an overall record of 20-3. Sophomore Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) earned a bronze medal in the women's foil division. Willette had a stellar freshman year making it all the way to the NCAA Championships where she earned the gold medal. Junior James Moody (Denver, Colo.) also earned a bronze medal at the U.S. Championships. He competed in the men's epee division. Moody had a record of 30-16 this past season and finished in first place at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals held at Fairleigh Dickinson University in March. Sophomore Nick Chinman (Boulder, Colo.) finished the weekend in ninth place in the men's foil division. Chinman also attended the NCAA Championships and earned a fifth place finish. Penn State is heading into the 2007-2008 season with an unprecedented 10th National Championship title under their belt. Both teams ended the year ranked first in the 2007 USFCA College Fencing Coaches' Poll.
