Fencing Team in First Place at the Close of Day Three
MADISON, N.J.; March 24, 2007 - The Penn State fencing teams have taken over first place at the 2007 NCAA Fencing Championships held at Drew University. They currently lead with a team score of 150. The second place team is St. John's University with a score of 142. Freshman Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) leads the women's charge. She had a perfect bout record of 14-0 and is in first place in the women's foil division. Senior Tamara Najm (Morristown, N.J.) is currently in fifth place in the standings with a bout record of 10-4. Sophomore Caitlin Thompson (Portland, Ore.) is in first place in the women's saber division. At the end of round four, she has a bout record of 13-1. Senior captain Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.), on her fourth trip to nationals, is currently in 10th place. She has a bout record of 8-6. In women's epee, freshman Anastasia Ferdman (Maalot, Israel) is leading the way for Penn State. Ferdman is currently in sixth place with a bout record of 9-5. Not far behind is senior teammate Case Szarwark (Nashville, Tenn.) who is currently in 12th place. At the end of round four, she has a bout record of 7-7. The 2007 NCAA Fencing Championships finish tomorrow with rounds 5-7 and the gold medal bouts for the women's divisions.
