Fencing Remains in Thick of Team Race After Third Day at NCAA Championships

Houston, Tex. - March 18, 2005 - The Nittany Lion men's and women's fencing teams finished day two and the men's competition in close third behind defending champions Ohio State and second place, St. John's at the 2005 NCAA Fencing Championships in Houston, Tex.

Freshman Franz Boghicev (Dormaglu, Germany) lost his bout for the bronze medal, after being top-seeded coming into the Championships. First seed senior Non Panchan (Bangkok, Thailand), lost his bout against Gabriel Sinkis of New York University, and also placed fourth overall.

Notre Dame's Michael Sobieraj beat out Wayne University's Marek Petraszek to take the gold in epee. In the team standings, Ohio State now stands at 94 points, with St. John's still trailing in second place with 84 points. The Nittany Lions are not far behind with 77 points, while the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame finished two days of competition with 70 points.

The women's competition starts up at the George R. Brown Convention Center today at 12 pm.
