Nittany Lion Fencers Get Four First Place Finishers at the Mid-Atlantic and South Regional Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lions fencing teams finished strong at the Mid-Atlantic and South Regional championships on Saturday at Drew University. First Place finishers were Franz Boghicev (Dormagen, Germany) in the Saber, Nick Chinman (Boulder, Colo.) in the Foil, Allison Glasser (Piedmont, Calif.) in Women's Foil, and Anastasia Ferdman (Maalot, Israel) in Women's Epee. On the men's side, Daniel Bak (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) joined Boghicev in the ranks with a third place finish for men's saber. William Anderson and Alexander Vongries (Bloomington, Minn.) finished in 11th and 12th respectively. In epee competition, Arthur Urman (Maalot, Isreal) led the way for Penn State taking a fourth place finish. Dennis Kraft (Rector, Pa.) took a seventh place finish and James Moody (Denver, Colo.) and Brian Heflich (East Setauket, N.Y.) finished in eighth and tenth respictively. Penn State's strongest category came in men's foil. Sam Perkins finished behind Chinman to take second place. Chun Ming Chang (Hong Kong, China) finished in forth place and Alexander Goldenberg (Guilford, Conn.) took eighth place.
For the women's, Anne Jackson took a fifth place finish behind Glasser in women's foil. Epee was the ladies best category, having a one-two finish with Keri Byerts (Webster, N.Y.) finishing behind Ferdman. In saber competition, Penn State had two top ten finishers with Jessica-Kim Danh taking third place and Stephanie Herbert taking eighth place. The NCAA National Championships begin on March 13. |
