Men's Fencers Go Undefeated at Northwestern Duals

Evanston, Ill. February 24, 2007 - The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams competed at Northwestern University today to end their dual-meet season. The men were undefeated for the day, while the women won four of their five duals.

The men defeated Lawrence University (27-0), Cleveland State (22-5), Wayne State (24-3) and the University of Detroit-Mercy (25-2). The men also had a big win over Notre Dame with a dual meet score of 16-11. The women defeated Cleveland State (26-1), Wayne State (17-10), Detroit-Mercy (24-3) and Notre Dame (14-13). They were narrowly defeated by Northwestern with a score of 13-14.

The Nittany Lion men had a trio of fencers that went undefeated today. In epee, freshman Steffen Launer (Neuweiler, Germany) led the men. In foil, it was junior Jeffrey Chang (Hong Kong, China) and in saber, it was junior Franz Boghicev (Dormagen, Germany).

Both the men's and women's teams had a successful season. The women had only one loss on the season. They finish with a record of 21-1. The men lost only twice, once to Harvard University and once to St. John's University. Their final record is 19-2.
