Penn State Fencing Teams Trounce Opponents at 2006 Brandeis Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. ¨C February 5, 2006 ¨C The Penn State men¡¯s and women¡¯s fencing teams both finished a perfect 5-0 Sunday at the Brandeis Invitational. Penn State competed against MIT, Sacred Heart, Boston College, Haverford and Brandeis. The strongest showing from the men¡¯s team came from the saber division. Junior Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) finished 12-0. Senior captain Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) finished 14-1 and sophomore Franz Boghicev (Dormagen, Germany) went 11-1. Junior Axel Reblewski (Le Moliere, France) ended with an even 3-3 record. Freshman Alexander Louton (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) led the men¡¯s foil group with a 13-2 mark. Fellow freshman Janos Gasparin (Grapevine, Tex.) went 10-2 and sophomore Jeffrey Chang (Hong Kong, China) finished 8-3. Sophomore Alexander Goldenberg (Guilford, Conn.) had an impressive day, finishing 6-1. In men¡¯s epee, sophomore Arthur Urman (Maalot, Israel) finished 14-1. Junior Erik Skarbratt (Kungsbacka, Sweden) went 7-0 and sophomore Dennis Kraft (Rector, Pa.) finished 7-3. Freshman James Moody (Denver, Colo.) rounded out the group, going 9-4. Sophomore Ashley Gin Fong Linker (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the women¡¯s saber group, finishing a superb 15-0. Junior captain Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) also had a fine day at 14-1. Junior Laura Hillstrom (Gaithersburg, Md.) went 6-1 and senior Juliet Howard (Santa Monica, Calif.) finished 4-4. The women¡¯s foil group had an outstanding day with an overall record of 42-3. Senior Annekathrin Donath (Tauber, Germany) and junior Tamara Najm (Morristown, N.J.) both went 14-0. Freshman Allison Glasser (Piedmont, Calif.) finished 14-1. Senior Andrea Wine (Friendswood, Tex.) guided the women¡¯s epee group with a 15-0 mark. Junior Case Szarwark (Nashville, Tenn.) finished 13-1 and senior Katarzyna Trzopek (Warsaw, Poland) went 8-1. Sophomore Megan Lutheran (Glen Gardner, N.J.) finished the duals at 6-1. Penn State's fencers will next see action at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals at Duke on Saturday, March 4.
