Nittany Lion Fencing Teams Head to Northwestern this Weekend

Jan. 31, 2008

University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will head to Northwestern this Saturday to take on a total of six teams in a duals matchup. Teams participating Saturday will be Penn State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wayne State, Cal-State Fullerton and Stanford. This comes one week after a successful performance at the dual meets that were held at Penn State last weekend. The men's team finished the weekend 6-0, to maintain the #1 ranking, while the #4 ranked women's team finished 3-2.

The men's team will be greatly tested this weekend as they will take on three teams that are in the top ten of the most recent USFCA coaches' poll. These matchups will include #2 Ohio State, #3 Notre Dame, and #10 Stanford. Last weekend, the Nittany Lions had their way with #5 Penn. So far in duals play this year, the men's side is 10-0.

On the women's side, Penn State will come into this weekends play with an 8-3 record. The women's team will have just as much of a challenge as the men as they will take on three of the top six teams in the women's poll. These matchups will include #1 Notre Dame, #2 Ohio State, and #6 Northwestern.

After the dual meets this weekend, the men's and women's teams will head to Brandeis for more duals on February 23. They will take on Boston College, Haverford, Sacred Heart, Tufts, and M.I.T. Following the meet at Brandeis, Penn State will continue duals on February 23 at Northwestern. The NCAA Championships for Fencing are scheduled for March 13-16 in Columbus, Ohio.
