Penn State Fencing Team Nearly Perfect In 2006 Penn State Invitational




UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ¨C January 28, 2006 ¨C The Penn State menĄŻs and womenĄŻs fencing teams dominated the 2006 Penn State Invitational with an impressive combined 10-1 record. Penn State welcomed Duke University, Drew University, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Temple University (women) and St. JohnĄŻs University. The menĄŻs team finished the day with an undefeated 5-0 mark while the womenĄŻs team finished 5-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of sixth ranked St. JohnĄŻs (14-13).

The menĄŻs saber division was led by sophomore Franz Boghicev (Dormagen, Germany) with a 14-1 record. Junior Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) finished 9-1. Fellow junior Axel Reblewski (Le Moliere, France) went 5-5 and senior captain Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) finished 3-3. Sophomore Alexander Vongries (Bloomington, Minn.) finished the day 2-2.

In menĄŻs foil, sophomore Jeffrey Chang (Hong Kong, China) went 9-4 and freshman Alexander Louton (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) finished 7-3. Freshman Janos Gasparin (Grapevine, Tex.) finished 6-5 and junior Ian Hamilton went 3-3. Sophomores Alexander Goldenberg (Guilford, Conn.) and Sergio Hey-Colon (Caguas Puerto Rico) finished with a combined 4-1 mark.

Sophomore Arthur Urman (Maalot, Israel) led the menĄŻs epee group with a 11-2 record. Freshman James Moody (Denver, Colo.) went 12-3 and junior Erik Skarbratt (Kungsbacka, Sweden) finished 10-4. Sophomore Dennis Kraft (Rector, Pa.) was a perfect 3-0.

Junior captain Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led the womenĄŻs saber group with a 16-2 record. Freshman Caitlin Thompson (Portland, Ore.) went 10-3 and junior Laura Hillstrom (Gaithersburg, Md.) finished 9-3. Sophomore Ashley Gin Fong Linker (Vernon Hills, Ill.) finished 4-5 and senior Juliet Howard (Santa Monica, Calif.) went 1-1.

In womenĄŻs foil, junior Tamara Najm (Morristown, N.J.) finished 13-4. Senior Annekathrin Donath (Tauber, Germany) finished 11-5 and freshman Allison Glasser (Piedmont, Calif.) went 12-5.

Senior Katarzyna Trzopek (Warsaw, Poland) led the womenĄŻs epee group, going 13-4. Fellow senior Andrea Wine (Friendswood, Tex.) finished 12-5 and junior Case Szarwark (Nashville, Tenn.) went 8-7. Sophomore Megan Lutheran (Glen Gardner, N.J.) went 2-2 and junior Katherine Cook (Setauket, N.Y.) finished 1-0.

Penn State's fencing teams return to action on Sunday, February 5 at Brandeis University with MIT, Drew University, Boston College, Johns Hopkins University and Tufts University.
