Senior Sophia Hiss has a national title on her mind. A three-time All-American who has earned those lofty laurels in the saber over the past two years, Hiss began her Penn State career in the foil. She arrived in the saber like a comet midway through her freshman year, fencing well enough at the NCAA Championships to battle for the gold medal. It was the premier moment of her young career. In 2004-05, she had a superb season that ended with an All-America performance at NCAAs. Last year, she posted a 39-4 record and finished fifth at nationals for her third All-America medal.

Lion Career:

2005-06: Hiss went 39-4 in 2005-06. After finishing second at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals, she went on to post a fifth place finish at nationals in Houston to earn her third straight All-America tag. Hiss had an outstanding dual match season that included three sperate dates when she went 10-1, 15-2 and 14-1. An outstanding student, Hiss was on the Big Ten All-Academic team. Hiss was also the women's fencing recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

2004-05: Hiss posted a superb 45-6 overall record. Hiss was outstanding throughout the campaign and grabbed the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional title prior to nationals. At the national championship event, Hiss placed fifth, earning her second straight All-America tag in her first season with a new weapon.

2003-04: Sophia moved to the saber and went 31-9 as a freshman, including a 14-2 mark on Feb 1, 2004. Hiss placed fourth at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals and then stormed the field to earn a spot in the NCAA title match.
