State College, Pa., November 18, 2002 ¡ª Lady Lion guard Kelly Mazzante (Montoursville, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Player of the Week for the period ending November 17, Big Ten officials announced Monday.

Mazzante led the Lady Lions to a perfect 2-0 record during the opening two rounds of the Preseason WNIT which saw Penn State post convincing wins over Bucknell and Siena.

The junior guard averaged 29.0 points per game while shooting .515 from the field over the Lady Lions¡¯ two games last week.

Mazzante¡¯s 33-point effort vs. Siena in the WNIT quarterfinals moved her past former Lady Lion Jen Bednerek (77-80) for 10th place on the Penn State all-time scoring list. Through 66 games, Mazzante has tallied 1,459 points for her career, 794 shy of tying Susan Robinson (89-92), who posted 2,253 over her 122-game career.

The 33 points vs. Siena extended Mazzante¡¯s current school record for most career 30-point games to 15.

The weekly honor marks the eighth time Mazzante has been honored as the Big Ten Player of the Week in her career, tying Carol Ann Shudlick of Minnesota for most all-time, who also won the award eight times from 1990-94.

The Lady Lions host Mississippi State in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT on Wednesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
