UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Fourth Annual Penn State Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award will be given to Penn State student organizations the Power of Pink and its creator Taryn Noll and the Pink Zone Student Group and its founder Eric Bodnar for their generosity in supporting the Pink Zone at Penn State. For the last four years, the student-run Power of Pink has been instrumental in helping with the survivor aspect of Pink Zone, as well as other volunteer assistance, while Pink Zone Student Group has been key in getting the Penn State student population involved in the Pink Zone at Penn State through fundraising and attendance at the Pink Zone game.
The Penn State women's basketball team gives out the Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award at each year's Pink Zone game. This award recognizes those who help champion our cause in finding the cure for breast cancer. The individuals or groups will be chosen to be honored because they have made significant contributions in the area of breast cancer awareness, prevention, education, treatment, research or care.
Noll and the Power of Pink have volunteered to assist with most tasks involved in the survivor committee for Pink Zone during the last four years. Members of Power of Pink help oversee all aspects of survivor registration leading up to the game and assist in checking in pre-registered survivors on game day. Additionally, they stuff all the survivor gift bags and serve as greeters for the buses when survivors arrive outside the BJC on game day. The organizations members have also helped Pink Zone by fulfilling sponsorship perks, helping at the Pink Zone table during the season and volunteering with many logistics on the day of the game. Power of Pink provides a tremendous amount of volunteer man-power to Pink Zone and there are many details that could not be coordinated without their assistance.
Bodnar and the Pink Zone Student Group have developed creative and exciting ways to generate buzz and increase fundraising for Pink Zone on campus. The student-run organization has its own line of Pink Zone merchandise that they sell each year. Additionally, the group coordinates the Pink Meet with the Penn State gymnastics team to raise money for Pink Zone. The Pink Zone Student Group also sends out mass mailings, soliciting donations from family and friends and also works to involve more downtown businesses to support Pink Zone. Last year, the group helped in planning a Mr. Think Pink pageant on campus to raise awareness for breast cancer charities and gather student support for Pink Zone. Pink Zone Student Group is extremely motived and works hard to assist in the fundraising for Pink Zone at Penn State and the group has a goal to raise $25,000 from their efforts this year.
The Inaugural Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award winner was the Centre County Breast Cancer Coalition (CCBCC). The CCBCC is a grassroots effort to provide breast cancer screenings to women living in Centre County who are uninsured or underinsured. In 2010, Fullington Trailways won the award coordinating 11 buses from 12 cities across Pennsylvania to bring survivors and their families to the 2011 Pink Zone game. Last year, Steve Falke and the Penn State Bookstore were honored for serving as the official provider of Pink Zone t-shirts and donating portions of the t-shirt sales for each of the first six years of Pink Zone at Penn State.
The 2013 Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Feb. 24 as the Lady Lions take on Michigan in the Bryce Jordan Center. Last year, the Lady Lions donated a record $203,000 to breast cancer causes. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Lewistown Hospital. For more information on the Pink Zone at Penn State, visit the official Pink Zone website at www.pennsylvaniapinkzone.org.
