University Park, Pa., June 19, 2001 - Penn State head wrestling coach Troy Sunderland announced the 2001-2002 slate for his Nittany Lions today. The schedule includes five home dual dates in Rec Hall, one a double-dual with Pittsburgh and West Virginia, and 14 scheduled dual opponents. Other highlights on the schedule include facing five intra-state foes, including trips to Clarion (Dec. 8), Edinboro (Dec. 9), Lehigh (Jan. 6) and Lock Haven (Feb. 23), and a return to the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., for the first time since 1991. Penn State will compete in three early season tournaments at East Stroudsburg (Nov. 17), Lock Haven's Mat-Town USA (Nov. 24) and the Penn State Open (Dec. 2) in Rec Hall, before beginning the dual meet slate with a road swing to Clarion and Edinboro. Return trips to the Reno Invitational (Dec. 20) and Wilkes Open (Dec. 28-29) precede the opening dual meet in Rec Hall as Penn State will take on Pittsburgh and West Virginia (Jan. 5). Penn State opens Big Ten action on Jan. 27, as they host Indiana in Rec Hall. The Hoosiers will be the first of eight Big Ten foes on the schedule. Penn State will face Northwestern (Feb. 1), Illinois (Feb. 3), Iowa (Feb. 10) and Ohio State (Feb. 15) on the road. Michigan (Feb. 8), Michigan State (Feb. 17) and Purdue (Feb. 24) will travel to Rec Hall. Off the schedule for the first time in three seasons will be defending NCAA Champion Minnesota. The dual meet schedule will prepare Penn State for post-season action which begins March 9-10, with the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill.
