Penn State wrestling adds four more recruits to team




University Park, Pa., June 13, 2002 - Penn State head wrestling coach Troy Sunderland today announced the addition of four recruits to an already stellar 2002 class. Heading the list of additions is State College High standout Jeremy Hart (State College, Pa.). Hart, who originally had verbally committed to wrestle for Cornell, will join Little Lion teammates Nathan Galloway and Matt Storniolo in a class that now numbers 12 and was ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Wrestling Magazine prior to the most recent additions. Lee Mannion (Fairfield, CT), Paul Schibell (West Long Branch, NJ), and Christopher Taylor (Polk, Pa) also have been added to the list of new Lions for the Fall.

Hart was a four-year starter and three-time PIAA place winner at State College High were he posted a career record of 140-17. He was the PIAA runner-up at 152 pounds his junior season, finished third at 160 in his senior campaign and was seventh at 152 as a sophomore. He posted a record of 33-3 his senior year. An accomplished freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler , he has won USAW National Champions in freestyle (twice), Greco-Roman and folkstyle. He has also claimed a Northeast Regional Cadet championship and placed second this year in freestyle at the West Regionals. He is expected to wrestle at 165 pounds for Penn State.

"We are excited to have Jeremy join our program," Sunderland said. "It was certainly unexpected for us this Spring, but we are happy to welcome someone of his caliber. He brings an intense work ethic and a well-rounded background in the community, academically, and athletically." Mannion was a three-year starter at Fairfield (Connecticut) High School where he compiled a career record of 108-25 with 57 pins. He posted a 49-1 record in his senior campaign and earned Connecticut Wrestler of the Year honors after winning a state championship at 135 pounds and placing third at the New England Championships. He placed third in the Connecticut states his junior year and was a two-time county and regional champion. A two-time team captain, Mannion finished fifth at the MAWA Eastern Nationals and is a member of the Connecticut National Wrestling Team as well.

Schibell wrestled two years at Christian Brothers Academy (New Jersey) where he finished with an overall record of 37-7. He was the 2001 District 22 Champion and earned team MVP honors. He won the 2001 Takedown Tournament and served as captain of the team .

Taylor wrestled his way to a 90-25 record at Franklin Area High School were he graduated in 1998. He finished fourth in the 1998 Regionals and following high school entered the Army for four years.

"I am happy to add this group of young men to the top class that we have assembled," Sunderland said.

The four men join a stellar class of recruits that include PIAA standouts Kyle Cathcart (Clarion, Pa.), C.J. Wonsettler (Scenery Hill, Pa.), James Yonushonis (Phillipsburg, Pa.), Cory Garis (Easton, Pa.) and Aaron Anspach (Columbia, Pa.), and New England champion Matt Smith (Plaistow, N.H.).
