Indianapolis, Ind., May 20, 2004 - The Penn State wrestling team will be well represented at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials, May 21-23, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind. Three former Penn State wrestlers and one current assistant coach will be competing to earn a spot on the six-man U.S. team and a trip to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Heading the list of Nittany Lions competing is heavyweight Kerry McCoy who will look to make the Olympic team for the second time after finishing fifth at the 2000 Olympics in Australia. McCoy, a two-time NCAA Champion at Penn State, is the five-time defending U.S. National Champion and will be the favorite to win the freestyle position at 264.5 pounds. By virtue of his U.S. Championship victory in Las Vegas earlier this year, McCoy advances all the way to final round held Sunday, May 23. He awaits the winner of a challenge tournament bracket held the first two days of competition and will take on that winner in a best-out-of-three competition for the Olympic spot. One member of the pool competing to face McCoy will be two-time All-American and 2004 NCAA finalist Pat Cummins who won the Northeast Regional to earn a spot in the field. Another former Nittany Lion competing is three-time All-American and 2000 NCAA Champion Jeremy Hunter who will be in the 121-pound bracket where he may face current Nittany Lion assistant coach Tim Dernlan, a 1998 All-American for Purdue.
