Cummins wins, four Nittany Lion wrestlers place at East Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier

Brockport, N.Y. - Penn State senior All-American Pat Cummins bounced back from his loss to Tommy Rowlands in the 2004 NCAA final to win the 264.5-pound freestyle weight class at the East Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier in Brockport, N.Y. last weekend. Cummins, who completed his Penn State career with a 38-5 record in his final season, went 4-0 in the tournament and pinned George Porter at 5:55 of the final to win the crown.

The victory earns Cummins a trip the to the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, May 21-23 in Indianapolis, Ind. There he could face former Penn State two-time NCAA Champion Kerry McCoy who earned a ticket to the 264.5-pound final by virtue of his fifth U.S. National title in early April.

Other Penn State wrestlers that placed in freestyle competition at the East Regional included Josh Moore and Josh Walker. Moore, a two-time All-American senior who also reached the 2004 NCAA final, placed third at 132 pounds after posting a 6-1 record in the tournament. He downed C.C. Fisher by technical fall (13-2) in the third place match, one of three technical falls and one pin for Moore in the tournament.

Walker finished fourth at 264.5-pounds after falling to Cummins in the semifinals by a 11-0 score. Walker posted a 3-2 mark in the tournament, but fell 10-0 to Michael Irving in the third place bout.

Penn State volunteer coach Josh Pearce also placed in the freestyle event taking home second place at 211.5 pounds.

Penn State freshman Philip Davis also had an impressive showing as he took second at 211.5 pounds in Greco-Roman competition. Davis went 2-1 in the tournament and fell by a close, 5-4, score to R.C. Johnson in the final.

The final chance for wrestlers to qualify for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling will be at the South Regional Olympic Team Trials Qualifier in Kenner, La., April 22-24.
