University Park, Pa., April 19, 2000 - Penn State coaching assistant and former two-time NCAA Champion Kerry McCoy will be in action this weekend at the U.S. National Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Action begins Thurs., April 20, and concludes Sat., April 22. McCoy, a member of the U.S. National Team, will be seeking his first U.S. National title after finishing third last year and fifth in 1998.

He will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed at 286 pounds as he currently holds the No. 2 ranking in the U.S. behind World Champion Stephen Neal. McCoy brings an 8-0 record on the year into the action as he claimed a gold medal at the World Cup in February and won the New York Athletic Club Christmas Open in December.

The winner of the tournament receives the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Olympic Trials in June. The No. 1 seed at the trials has the luxury of bypassing the mini-tournament that all the other wrestlers must compete in and only wrestling a best two-out-of-three against the winner of the mini-tournament for the right to represent the U.S. at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
