Wrestling hands out post season awards at banquet




State College, Pa., April 5, 2004 -The Penn State wrestling team put the finishing touches on the 2003-2004 season Sunday as the team held its annual banquet at the Ramada Inn in State College.

The Nittany Lions posted their best dual meet record in Head Coach Troy Sunderland's six-year tenure going 14-5, 5-3 in the Big Ten, on the season. Senior co-captains Josh Moore (133) and Pat Cummins (Hwt.) both reached the NCAA finals and brought home their second All-America honor as Penn State finished 12th at the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Eric Bradley won a Big Ten title at 184 pounds, one of three conference finalists, as the Nittany Lions took fifth at the Big Ten Tournament.

Moore and Cummins shared the Outstanding Wrestler of the Year award. Moore posted a 44-8 mark on the year, third best all-time, and led the team with 78 dual meet points and a 17-2 dual record. Cummins went 38-5 on the year and scored 63 dual points with a 15-3 dual mark. Moore, who also set single-season (24) and career (53) pinning records on the year and will leave Penn State ranked third all-time with a 146-38 career mark and first all-time with 184 matches wrestled, also received an award for being the senior with the most career dual meet wins. He posted a 44-16 dual record on his career.

State College Area High School graduate Matt Storniolo was honored as the Outstanding Freshman Wrestler. The 149-pounder posted a 34-10, 14-5 dual meet, record in his red-shirt freshman season and reached the Big Ten final. Storniolo was also the third Nittany Lion to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was ranked among the top 10 the majority of the year.

Junior Adam Smith was named the team's Most Improved Wrestler after he posted a 27-15, 10-7 dual meet, record and earned his third trip to the NCAA Championships with a seventh place Big Ten finish. He was ranked among the top 15 most of the year in a very deep weight class.

Bradley received the Courage Award after returning from what was diagnosed as a career-ending back injury a summer ago to post a magnificent sophomore campaign. He tied Moore for the team lead with a 17-2 dual record and posted an impressive 36-5 record while reaching as high as the No. 4 ranking in the nation.

Senior Curt Thompson received the Academic Excellence and Community Service award for his contributions off the mat and red-shirt freshman Bill Kinder received the Eleventh Man award for his leadership and dedication to the program. Senior Marat Tomaev, who had his final campaign cut short by torn knee ligaments, was honored as the top freestyle wrestler for the second straight year. Longtime team trainer Dan Monthley was presented the Ed Sulkowski Award for his dedication and hard work in helping the program. The Outstanding Alumnus Award was presented to Doug Frey (1952-54) who along with his twin brother, Don, was a member of the 1953 NCAA Championship team. Senior manager Allison Beckwith was honored with the newly created Carl A. Winterburn Manager's Award.
