Wrestling team hands out awards at post-season banquet

The Penn State wrestling team wrapped up its 2000-2001 season Sunday with the annual Wrestling Club Luncheon at the Atherton Hotel. Wrestlers, coaches and around a 100 guests gathered to reflect on the season in which Penn State posted a 7-13 dual meet mark, earned a No. 25 final ranking, finished 10th at the Big Ten Tournament and tied for 25th at the NCAA Championships.

Numerous awards were handed out on the afternoon starting with the honoring of Sam Harry (1942-46) with the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Harry still ranks fourth all-time at Penn State with a 91.4 percent dual meet winning percentage as he posted a 32-3 dual meet mark. He also won two EIWA Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 1946 EIWA Tournament. Captain of the 1946 team, he earned two All-America honors at the NCAA Tournament finishing third at 128 pounds in 1942 and 1946.

Also honored on the day was club member Art Freeman as he was given the Ed Sulkowski Award for dedication and hard work that has helped the Penn State wrestling program.

Wrestlers honored on the day included sophomore Mark Becks (174) who was awarded the William Neidig award as the team's outstanding wrestler. Becks posted a 22-15 mark on the year and tied for the team lead with nine dual meet wins. He finished sixth at the Big Ten Tournament and qualified for his first NCAA Tournament.

Josh Moore (125) was honored as the team's outstanding freshman wrestler as he led the squad with a 30-17 record and finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships. His twin brother, Scott (133), earned the outstanding freestyle wrestler award and fellow 133-pounder Marat Tomaev was honored with the Larry Reilly Courage Award for courage in wrestling to help the team. Other award winners on the day included senior Dave Heckard (197) who was presented an award for being the senior with the most dual meet wins. He won three dual meets this season after transferring to Penn State from Villanova last year. Heckard also teamed with fellow senior Jeremy Sauve (165) to be honored as the teams Eleventh Men for leadership and dedication.

Junior Pete Mielnik (197) earned the team's most improved wrestler award after posting a 24-17 record and placing seventh at the Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Doc Vecchio (165) earned the team's academic excellence and community service award.
