Wrestlers draw first round NCAA opponents
State College, Pa., March 19, 2002 - The Penn State wrestling team's seven qualifiers for the NCAA Championships March 21-23 in Albany, N.Y. learned their first round opponents and possible second round match-ups as the tournament brackets were released Tuesday evening. Penn State enters the tournament with its most qualifiers in the last three years after finishing sixth, also a three-year best, at the Big Ten Championships. Junior Doc Vecchio (31-11), who was the Lion's top finisher at the Big Tens taking third, was the only Nittany Lion to be seeded as he drew the No. 11 seed at 165. Penn State posted a 12-12 record in last year's tournament, tying for 25th place. Five returners on this year's squad, Marat Tomaev, Scott Moore, Nate Wachter, Mark Becks and Pete Mielnik, have posted two wins in the NCAA tournament. Competition begins Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Pepsi Arena.
