University Park, Pa., Feb. 27, 2002 - Former Penn State standouts Dick Lemyre (class of '54) and John Fritz (class of '74) will be inducted into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Hall of Fame on March 10. The ceremony for the five-member class of 2002 will be held prior to the final round of the EIWA Championships at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena. Lemyre and Fritz will be joined in induction by Thad Turner and Harold Masem of Lehigh and Emil Perona of Rutgers. Penn State was a member of the EIWA for 56 years from 1918-74. Lemyre was a two-time All-American at 130 pounds, placing third in 1952 and second in 1953. He helped lead Penn State to it's only NCAA title in 1953, the Lions remain the only Eastern team ever to win an NCAA crown. Lemyre co-captained Penn State 1954 team and finished his career with a 39-3 record. His 92.9 career winning percentage ranks third all-time at Penn State and he owned a perfect, 19-0 dual meet record. He was a three-time EIWA champion (1952-54), helping the Lions to win two conference titles. Lemyre went on to win a Gold medal at the 1951 Pan-American Games. Fritz was a three-time All-American and the 1975 NCAA Champion at 126 pounds at Penn State. He captained the 1975 Penn State team and finished his career with a 71-10-4 record. He won two EIWA titles, including earning Outstanding Wrestling honors at the 1974 EIWA tournament after defeating eventual two-time NCAA Champion Mike Frick in the finals. Fritz ranks third all-time at Penn State in NCAA wins (17) and in NCAA winning percentage (85%). He went on to serve as the head coach at Penn State from 1993-98, earning National Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1998 and posting a record of 87-33-2. In his six seasons at the helm, he guided Penn State to five, top five NCAA finishes, including a runner-up finish in 1993. He led Penn State to the No. 1 national ranking, National Dual Team Championship and a 22-0-1 record in 1993, the Lions only undefeated campaign in the last 28 years. Four of his wrestlers earned NCAA individual titles, nine reached the NCAA finals and 21 earned All-America honors. Fritz currently serves as the director of athletics and recreation for Penn State's commonwealth campuses.
