Jose Quinones Named First Team All-American

Long Beach, Calif., May 2, 2001 - At the NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship Banquet, Penn State setter Jose Quinones (Bayamon, P.R.) was named as a first team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Quinones, a third team All-American last season, is the 47th Penn State men's volleyball player to receive All-American honors in the program's 25 year history. A junior, Quinones is the Penn State career assists leader after only three seasons running the Nittany Lion offense. Quinones has been named first team All-EIVA all three seasons as at Penn State. The past two seasons, Quinones been named the Uvaldo Acosta Memorial EIVA Player of the Year. In 1999, as a freshman, Quinones was the EIVA Newcomer of the Year.

A total of 64 student-athletes representing 23 schools were nominated for AVCA All-America status. Hawaii outside hitter Costas Theocharidis was selected as the AVCA National Player of the Year for 2001.

Penn State faces BYU May 3 at 7:30 (PT) in the semifinals of the 2001 NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship. The match will be shown tape-delayed by ESPN2 on Friday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m. (ET). The final of the 2001 NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship will be aired live by ESPN2 on Saturday, May 5 at 4:00 p.m. (PT).
