Nittany Lion Men's Volleyball To Face Long Beach State in NCAA Semifinals
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; May 2, 2004 - The EIVA Champion Penn State men's volleyball team has been selected the No. 3 seed in this week's NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship, hosted the University of Hawaii.
The Nittany Lions (23-6) will face second-seeded Long Beach State (27-6) Thursday, May 6 at 5:59 p.m. HT (11:59 p.m. EDT). The match will be televised live on ESPN2. The second semifinal matches top-seeded BYU (27-4) against No. 4 seed Lewis (19-13), the defending national champion. That match will air on ESPN2 Friday at 2:00 p.m. The NCAA Championship match is Saturday, May 8 at 4:00 p.m. HT (10:00 p.m. EDT) and will air live on ESPN2 from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. Coach Mark Pavlik's Nittany Lions won their sixth consecutive EIVA title Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark. Penn State will be making its 19th NCAA appearance in the 35 years of the championship and won the 1994 national championship. Penn State has not faced Long Beach State or BYU this season and split a pair of matches with Lewis, losing 3-1 on January 9 in Hawaii and winning 3-2 on Jan. 17 at Lewis. BYU won the MPSF title, Lewis won the MIVA crown and Long Beach State was the NCAA at-large selection after losing to BYU in the MPSF final. Penn State will host the 2006 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
